So, I did quite a bit of reading last night, isn't the Internet a wonderful thing! Not if you're unfit, unhealthy and it's all there in black and white. So I started thinking about what makes for a healthy lifestyle. My conclusion is: what I eat, exercise, low alcohol, sleep and how much water I drink. I know, there are a number of you that will quote chapter and verse about the myth of water consumption, before you do you should know that 90% of the liquid I consume is coffee! According to one website, I should just count down the days until my kidney stones appear.
So, if the control of food, exercise, alcohol, sleep & water is the path to enlightenment, then the path I've traveled is pretty grim. I grabbed my organizer for the last week and thought back to the week that was. I gave myself a '1' if I did good, and a '0' if things hit the fan. Not pretty reading:
Monday
Food - 1 (nice strong start!), Exercise - 0, Alcohol - 0, Sleep - 0, Water - 0: Total - 1
Tuesday
Food - 0, Exercise - 0, Alcohol - 0, Sleep - 1, Water - 0: Total - 1
Wednesday
Food - 1, Exercise - 0, Alcohol - 0, Sleep - 0, Water - 0: Total - 1
Thursday
Food - 1, Exercise - 0, Alcohol - 1, Sleep - 0, Water - 0: Total - 2
Friday
Food - 1, Exercise - 0, Alcohol - 0, Sleep - 0, Water - 0: Total - 1
Saturday
Food - 0, Exercise -1, Alcohol - 0, Sleep - 0, Water - 0: Total -1
Sunday
Food - 0, Exercise - 0, Alcohol - 1, Sleep - 1, Water - 0: Total - 2
Shocking! No wonder my body feels like a 50 yo! An average of just over 1! Now I'm not saying that I need to average a 5 to live well, not at all, but I probably need to be consistently above 3! I'm sure someone could tell me how important each one of these is, but in my simplistic view how much water i drink isn't as important as to whether I've exercised and slept well.
So there you have it. The self intervention is complete. After jotting these notes down I ran to Dicks to get myself a water bottle and some new sneakers. My guessing is that if I have water on my desk I'll drink it and without a pair of clean sneakers I won't venture onto the road. I do however hate new sneakers, I'm hoping for a nice rainy, muddy evening for my first run/jog/walk tonight!
So, I have no excuse, shoes are at the ready and my gear is clean. Of to the road I go.
